How a Marine Loan Calculator Works
A marine loan payment depends on three things: how much you borrow, the interest rate the lender charges and how long you take to pay it back. Marine lenders judge risk differently than auto lenders because boats depreciate faster and take more wear from the marine environment. Even so they use the same standard amortization formula to calculate your monthly payment.
The calculator above runs these equations automatically as you adjust the boat price, down payment, interest rate and loan term.
Example calculation: A $50,000 boat with 15% down means you finance $42,500 at 7.5% APR over a 15-year term.
r = 7.5% ÷ 12 = 0.00625 monthly rate. n = 15 × 12 = 180 total payments.
This works out to a monthly payment of about $394. Over 15 years total interest costs add up to $28,416. Shortening the term to 10 years raises the monthly payment slightly but cuts the total interest paid by a wide margin.
2026 Average Marine Loan Rates by Credit Score
Marine lenders price interest rates in risk tiers based on credit profile, loan amount and vessel age. As of mid-2026 average marine loan rates hover around 8.4%. Buyers with excellent credit qualify for the lowest tiers.
| Credit Tier | FICO Range | Typical Marine Loan APR (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Excellent | 740+ | 6.5% - 8.0% |
| Good | 670 - 739 | 8.0% - 10.0% |
| Fair | 620 - 669 | 10.0% - 12.5% |
| Poor | Below 620 | 12.5% - 18%+ |
Ranges reflect marketplace averages as of mid-2026 and move with Federal Reserve policy. Your actual rate depends on down payment size, vessel age, survey results and loan term.
Boat & Marine Sales Tax by State
Marine sales tax is based on the state where the boat is registered and mainly used, not where you bought it. Several states cap vessel sales tax, which can mean real savings for buyers.
| State | Base Tax Rate | Statutory Marine Tax Cap |
|---|---|---|
| South Carolina | 5% | $500 |
| North Carolina | 3% | $1,500 |
| Virginia | 2% | $2,000 |
| Maryland | 5% | $15,900 |
| Florida | 6% | $18,000 |
| Texas | 6.25% | No cap (local surtaxes apply) |
| California | 7.25% | No cap |
| New York | 4% (state) | Taxed on first $230,000 only |
| OR, MT, DE, NH, AK | 0% | No state sales tax |
Local municipal or county surtaxes may apply in addition to base state tax rates. Always verify tax laws with your state Department of Revenue prior to closing.
Our calculator automatically applies state-specific sales tax caps so your monthly payment estimate stays accurate on large vessel purchases.

Frequently Asked Questions
Most marine lenders prefer credit scores of 700 or higher for competitive interest rates and extended loan terms. Approvals are still possible in the upper 600s, though lenders may ask for a bigger down payment or move you into a higher rate tier.
Marine loan terms typically run 10 to 20 years for larger boats and yachts. Smaller personal watercraft or trailerable boats usually get shorter terms of 5 to 7 years depending on loan amount and vessel age.
Marine loan interest may qualify for an IRS second home mortgage interest deduction if the vessel has sleeping berths, a permanent galley (cooking area) and a dedicated head (toilet facility). Consult a qualified tax professional to verify IRS eligibility guidelines.
Vessel sales tax or use tax is based on where the boat is registered and mainly kept, not where you bought it. Most state tax agencies grant a reciprocity credit for sales tax already paid in another state.
Marine lenders generally ask for a down payment between 10% and 20% of the purchase price. A higher down payment lowers your loan-to-value ratio, which can help secure a lower rate tier and a smaller monthly payment.
A secured marine loan uses the vessel as collateral, which gets you lower interest rates and longer terms. An unsecured loan works like a personal loan with no collateral, but it carries higher interest rates and a shorter payback term.
